A layered bamboo art map of Stewart Island / Rakiura, celebrating the scale, remoteness and natural beauty of one of Aotearoa’s most remarkable southern landscapes.

This Matai Gallery large art map captures Stewart Island / Rakiura in impressive detail, extending north-east to Ruapuke Island and south-west to the edge of the continental shelf, where the seabed drops to more than 1000 metres deep.

The map includes the island’s major walking tracks, including the much-loved three day Rakiura Great Walk, along with as many surrounding islands as possible, including Ruapuke Island, Bench Island, Codfish Island / Whenua Hou, Great South Cape Island / Taukihepa and Big Moggy Island. North Trap Reef is also included, along with the island’s roads - though beyond Oban, nature very much takes the lead.

Known for its wild beauty, birdlife, walking tracks, fishing history and sense of remoteness, Stewart Island / Rakiura is a place that holds strong meaning for those who have visited, lived there or simply feel drawn to the far south.

Carefully constructed by hand, layer by layer, in our Wairarapa workshop, this eight-layer bamboo art map brings depth, texture and presence to a landscape shaped by island, ocean, tracks and memory.

Choose from a black or white frame to suit your space. Made from layered bamboo ply and framed in FSC pine, each map is carefully finished by hand. Due to the handmade construction and natural materials used, each piece may vary slightly from the image shown, making every map unique.
